1983-98 Requesting Support And Funding For The Fishery Industrial Technology Center.1 2 l n 15 17 KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 83 -98 -R A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY REQUESTING SUPPORT AND FUNDING FOR THE FISHERY INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY CENTER. WHEREAS, the seafood industry employes one out of ten Alaskans .throughout the State and is the largest private employer within the State, and WHEREAS, the Alaska fishing industry has yet to take full advantage of the rich resources available, and WHEREAS, there is a need to enhance the competence of Alaskans to derive maximum benefit from Alaska's fishery resources, and WHEREAS, the first session of the Twelfth Alaskan Legislature passed a bill establishing a Fishery Industrial Technology Center (FITC) as an ,integral part of the University of Alaska, and WHEREAS, the Center was created to respond to a need expressed by the Alaska fishing industry to institute an aggressive training program coupled with strong research and development activities to assist Alaskans, and WHEREAS, the Center's primary charge is to create employment opportunities in the Alaska fishing industry by providing training, adapting existing technologies and creating new technologies which will enhance the competitiveness of the industry, and WHEREAS, funds approved by the First Session of the Thirteenth Legislature intended to pay for "bid ready architectural designs" were vetoed by Governor Sheffield from the Center's budget due to the fact the Governor did not have sufficient information on the project. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly strongly urges the University of Alaska Board of Regents and the Governor of the State of Alaska to support and fund the Fishery Industrial Technology Center in order for the Center to initiate research and developmental accompanying correspondence be forwarded to the following persons: activities which will benefit the entire State.
