WHEREAS, the fishing industry is the mainstay of the Kodiak economy,
WHEREAS, Kodiak is the State's largest fishing port with a large
of species landed by a variety of major gear types, and
WHEREAS, it appears that Kodiak will rank as the nation's number one
*fishing port for 1981 in terms of dollar value landed, and
WHEREAS, the broad scope of species, gear types, and consequent issues .
lof the Kodiak fishery necessitates a commensurate understanding by the State's
..highest fisheries regulatory authority, and
it
ii WHEREAS, management of the Kodiak and Westward shellfish resources
!(primarily King Crab, Tanner Crab, and Shrimp) demand a particular knowledge
and expertise by members of the Alaska Board of Fisheries, and
WHEREAS, Mr. Nick Szabo has demonstrated this knowledge and understand -
ing in the past, but with his resignation leaves the Board with a serious void
regarding this particular shellfish management regime and regional knowledge,
and
WHEREAS, without this particular expertise, the management integrity
of this particularly diverse region and species /gear -type mix could surely
'':'suffer, and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wayne Kvasnikoff is experienced and knowledgeable in the
shellfish and finfish fisheries of Kodiak, Westward, and other regions of the
l ;State through his hands on involvement in a variety of fisheries, gear- types,
and areas, and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wayne Kvasnikoff has demonstrated himself to be capable
Ilof reasonable, rational, and well - informed decisions regarding fisheries
u management.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly
