A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
COMMENDING THE CREW OF THE P.V. VIGILANT FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE
RENDERED ON DECEMBER 3, 1977.
WHEREAS, on Saturday, December 3, 1977, while on patrol in
the Dutch Harbor area of the Aleutian Chain, the State of Alaska,
Department of Public Safety P.V. Vigilant received a Mayday call
for help; and
WHEREAS, the P.V. Vigilant found the 85 -foot steel crabber,
Baron, aground one -half mile southeast of Cape Cheerful with
heavy swells breaking over the grounded vessel; and
WHEREAS, after righting the Baron's life raft, the Vigilant's
crew was able to remove all hands from the Baron by repeatedly
drifting the Baron's life raft back and forth between the two
vessels;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly that in recognition of this outstanding service, the
Borough Assembly commends the actions of Commanding Officer Lt.
Robert A. Lochman, Sgt. Phillip V. Gilson, Officer John Stimson,
Officer Donald Starbard, and Engineer Ralph Miner in successfully
rescuing the crew of the Baron under extremely difficult con-
ditions.
