A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH REQUESTING THE SECRETARY
OF THE INTERIOR TO DELETE THE ABANDONED VILLAGE OF AFOGNAK FROM THE NATIVE
LAND CLAIMS SETTLEMENT ACT.
WHEREAS, the U. S. Forest Service has expressed desire and funded
plans to obtain information and collect data that will benefit small
timber harvest programs throughout the Kodiak Island Borough and
WHEREAS, parts of the Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act are
in error and have made these plans impossible until this error is corrected
and
WHEREAS, this data and information will benefit all Kodiak Island
Area forest land regardless of ownership and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act designated
the abandoned Village of Afognak as qualifying for :and Selection under this
Act and
WHEREAS, the last person left this Village in 1964 and
WHEREAS, the 1970 Census shows "0" population for this village and
WHEREAS, eliminating Afognak Village from the Alaska Native Land
Claims Settlement Act will not detract from the benefits awarded to Alaska
Natives under this Act, THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED by the Kodiak Island Borough that the Secretary of
Interior, Rogers C. B. Morton, be informed of this body's desire as an
expression of the people of the Kodiak Island Borough, to quickly amend the
Alaska Native Land Claims Settlement Act by deleting Afognak Village under
the terns of this Act.
