THE CREATION OF A NJ•n Fn.R OF FISHERTES AND OTHER MARINE -ORIEN'd'ED EDUCATIONAL
AND RESEARCH FACILITIES FOR ALASKA IN KODIAK, ALASKA.
WHEREAS, the leadership of the University of Alaska, in testimony given
before the Alaska Senate Committee on Health, Welfare and Education, continues
to indicate its view that faculty and students in sufficient number cannot be
brought to Kodiak at this time for establishment of a college of fisheries and
other marine - oriented higher education facilities, and
WHEREAS, there exists a clear -cut, long - standing and vital need for
establishment in Kcdiak of a college of fisheries and other marine-oriented
educational and research facilities, and
WHEREAS, the marine fisheries continue to be Alaska's greatest industry in
number of people employed, and
WHEREAS, Alaska is the greatest fisheries state in the nation, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak is and has been one of the nationft top four fisheries ports
in the entire nation for the past four years and projections indicate its
potentials when fully developed will make it the nation's leading fisheries port,
and

WHEREAS, the University of Alaska is unable for whatever reasons it states,
to create and establish such a college of fisheries and marine- oriented facilities
as are desirable and needed in the State of Alaska,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY go
on record urging the State legislature to take whatever actions are necessary to
obtain the assistance and co- operation of other state universities and institutions
of higher education, so that we may iai&iately embark upon a program for creating
a college of fisheries and other marine - oriented educational and research facilities
for Alaska in Kodiak, Alaska. Further, authorization is given for copies of this
resolution and action to be provided to members of the State legislature, the
Governor and members of the Alaska Congressional delegation requesting and urging
their full support on this matter.
