1989-23 Limiting the Terms of Office of Borough Mayor and Assembly and Placing the Question Before the VotersWHEREAS, Title 29 now allows for local limitation of terms if ratified
by a majority of voters voting on the question, and
WHEREAS, a limitation in the number of terms any one person may
serve would tend to cleanse the body politic;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly that:
Section 1. This ordinance is of a general and permanent nature
and shall become a part of the Code of Ordinances.
Section 2. Chapter 2.17 is amended to read:
7 Term. The term of an assemblyman is three years or
until a successor is selected and qualified. One person may not serve more
than two full consecutive elected terms.
Section 3. Chapter 2.20 is amended to read:
2.20.020 Election and term. [Any voter of the Kodiak Island
Borough is eligible to hold the office of mayor.] The mayor is elected at
large for a term of two years and until a successor is elected and has
qualified. The mayor's regular term begins on the first Monday following
certification of the mayor's election. One person may not serve more than
two full consecutive elected terms.
Section 4. This ordinance shall become effective upon passage by a
majority of the voters voting on the question at the regular election of
October 3, 1989. Upon certification of the election, those assemblymembers
who are not elected at the October 3 election are deemed to be serving their
first term for the purposes of this ordinance. The persons elected as mayor
and assemblymembers at the October 3 election upon taking office will
commence their first term for the purposes of this ordinance.
