1984-39 Ordinance Placing the Question of Whether or not the KIB Should Levy and Areawide Sales Tax1 9 2 KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ORDINANCE NO. 84- 39 -0(A) AN ORDINANCE OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY PLACING THE QUESTION OF WHETHER OR NOT THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH SHOULD LEVY AN AREAWIDE SALES TAX. WHEREAS, the City of Kodiak currently collects a City sales tax on various sales, rents, and services; and WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough wishes to place before the voters of the Kodiak Island Borough the question of whether to collect an areawide sales tax in the amount of one cent per dollar to be levied on sales, rentals, and services within the Borough; and WHEREAS, this areawide sales tax would eliminate the present sales tax on residential heating fuel, telephone, and electricity; and WHEREAS, it is the intent that any sales tax collected above that needed for the exemption on utilities be used in support of the capital and operational needs of the Kodiak Island hospital; and WHEREAS, if the sales price of an item or items or the charge for rental of any property or performance of any service exceeds five hundred dollars ($500.00) for a single transaction, that portion of the price or charge in excess of five hundred dollars ($500.00) shall be exempt under the Borough -wide sales tax; and WHEREAS, a person sixty -five (65) years of age or older who has resided in the Kodiak Island Borough for a continuous period of 30 days or more will be able to obtain%a senior citizen's sales tax exemption under the Borough -wide sales tax; and WHEREAS, the general classes of sales, rentals, services, and sale for resale exempt frgm the City of Kodiak under Section 3.08.040 and 3.08.050 of the City Code will be exempt under the Borough -wide sales tax. NOW, . REFORE, BE IT ORDAINED that the Kodiak Island Borough at their regular - section of October 2, 1984 shall present to the voters of the Kodiak Islan Borough the following proposition: PROPOSITION "Shall the Kodiak Island Borough collect an areawide sales tax in the amount of one cent per dollar to be levied on sales, rentals, and services within the Borough ?" YES NO NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that should this proposition be approved by the voters of the Kodiak Island Borough, it would become effective July 1, 1985.
