AN ORDINANCE OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BORDLX33 AMENDING THE
KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH CODE OF ORDINANCES AND RESOW IC S BY ADDING
THEM= SECTION 7.1 TO CHAPTER THREE (3) PP HIDING FOR THE DEFERMENT
OF CERTAIN TAMS
BE IT ORDAINED by the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly that
Chapter 3 of the Kodiak Island Borough Code of Ordinances and Resolutions
be and the same is hereby amended by adding thereto Section 7.1 on
Page 3.1.5 thereof which shall read as follows;
Section 7.1 Deferment of Taxation: One piece of residential
property owned and occupied by a citizen who meets the following require-
ment as defined by the Social Security Act; retired insured man or woman,
age 62 (minimumâ–º) age 65 (standard) ; widow age 60 (minimum) age 62
(standard) ; disabled widow, age 50 ( minimml and 62 (standard)4
dependent widower, age 50 (minimum), age 62 (standard); dependent husband
or widower of retired or disabled wife, age 62 (mininam) and 65 (standard);
dependent widower, no option, age 62 (standard); who is a resident of Kodiak
Island Borough, Alaska, and who had an annual income for the preceding
calendar year of not more than THREE THOUSAND and No /lOOths ($3,000.00)
DOLLARS, the property tax on the property owned by such senior citizen up
to and including the amount of TWO HUNDRED FIF'T'Y and No /100ths ($250.00)
DOLLARS shall be deferred providing such senior citizen of the Kodiak Island
Borough has been a resident of the State of Alaska for not less than ten (10)
years last past and is the he of the household, and providing that not more
than one (1) deferment shall be allowed to any are person per year. This
exemption is not automatic but must be applied for. The application mast be
accompanied by copies of the previous calendar year's Federal Income Tax returns.
The deferment may be applied for at any time during the year by each qualified
citizen, but not later than May 31 of the current tax year. Eadr application
Shall be presented to the Borough Assembly for approval and must receive an
affirmative vote from all of the Assembly makers present before the
deferment is granted. Any citizen whose property is listed on the foreclosure
list at the time this ordinance becomes effective and would have
qualified for deferment under the terms hereof as to age, income
and residency at the time the taxes became due shall be included
provided that application and documentation is presented for
consideration by the Assembly within sixty (60) days after this
ordinance becomes effective. All taxes deferred under this provi-
sion shall remain as a lien upon the property and shall become
due and payable upon transfer of the property or upon death of the
senior citizen to whom the deferment was granted.
