1996-01-I Ballot Measure Allowing a 5% Sales TaxKODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH INITIATIVE ORDINANCE NO. 96 -01 -I AN ORDINANCE INITIATING A BALLOT MEASURE FOR THE OCTOBER 1, 1996 REGULAR MUNICIPAL ELECTION WHICH, IF PASSED BY THE VOTERS, WOULD ALLOW THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH TO LEVY AND COLLECT A TAX NOT TO EXCEED FIVE PERCENT (5 %) OF THE AMOUNT CHARGED PERSONS FOR USING TRANSIENT ACCOMMODATIONS WITHIN THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH WHEREAS, the voters of the Kodiak Island Borough have become increasingly aware of the importance of a diversified economic base to the stability and well -being of the Kodiak Island Borough; and WHEREAS, natural scenic attractions and available outdoor activities seem to attract tourists to Kodiak Island; and WHEREAS, Alaska Statutes 29.45.050 provides that a borough may levy and collect a tax on services provided in the borough and exemptions may be granted; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE QUALIFIED REGISTERED VOTERS OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH THAT: Section 1: This ordinance is of a special nature. Section 2: The following ballot measure shall be submitted to the qualified voters of the Kodiak Island Borough at the October 1, 1996 Regular Municipal Election: "Shall the Kodiak Island Borough levy and collect a tax not to exceed five percent (5 %) of the amount charged persons for using transient accommodations within the Kodiak Island Borough ?" Yes No Section 3: If the question submitted to the voters passes, the Assembly of the Kodiak Island Borough is empowered to enact such ordinances as necessary to implement and administer the collection of the tax to begin on January 1, 1997. Section 4: Municipalities within the Kodiak Island Borough that levy and collect a tax to persons using transient accommodations within the Kodiak Island Borough shall be exempt from this tax.
