Re: Letter of Local Government Support for the Alaska Ocean Cluster’s Virtual Reality Network for the EDA 2020 SPRINT Challenge
Dear Representative Kelly:
I would like to confirm my support for the Virtual Reality Network project of the Alaska Ocean Cluster, a program
of the Bering Sea Fishermen’s Association.
In line with the Economic Development Agency’s 2020 Scaling Pandemic Resilience through Innovation and
Technology (SPRINT) Challenge funding opportunity, the Alaska Ocean Cluster Virtual Reality Network
project will improve Alaska’s Covid-impacted ocean economy, through virtual reality technology which provides
a virtual space for entrepreneurs and mentors to teach and learn together remotely. Through this project, the
Alaska Ocean Cluster will leverage its network in support of Alaska’s tremendous ocean resources and expertise
and increase regional, national, and government connectivity to support commercialization and
entrepreneurship.
The Virtual Reality Network project advances Alaska Ocean Cluster’s mission to promote and grow Alaska’s
ocean economy by leveraging existing strengths while supporting innovation and emerging opportunities to
diversify the economy. Under the Virtual Reality Network project, Alaska Ocean Cluster will address the
challenges of economic diversity, human and financial capacity, workforce development, and limited rural
infrastructure by connecting people through virtual reality technology to sustainably use Alaska’s abundant and
healthy natural resources.
The Virtual Reality Network project has the potential to greatly benefit Alaskans by connecting ocean-based
businesses in Alaska with the tools, resources, expertise, and support they need to grow their businesses.
I strongly support the proposed Virtual Reality Network project and encourage awarding the full amount of
funding requested. If you have any questions, please contact me at (907) 486-9312 or clerks@kodiakak.us.
Sincerely,
Bill Roberts, Borough Mayor
