SUBJECT:Kodiak IslandBoroughTsunami Siren Update
The Kodiak Island Borough (KIB) currently operates and maintains 9 sirens located at
various locations throughout theKIB.
These locationsare:
Metrokin Way, Chiniak (Near School),Bayview Drive, Sargent Creek Road (Womens
BayFire Station), Carroll Way, Three Sisters, Seabreeze Circle, RezanofDrive (Bayside
Fire Station), South Russian Creek Road.
With the recent seismic event which ledto theTsunami Warning on November 30, 2018,
residents contacted staff with several observations regarding the function of theKIB
tsunami sirens. This prompted a request to verify thefunctionality ofthesirens.
Staff was assigned to travel to the siren sitesandverify thefunction. Three sites were
identified as questionable and investigated for function.
Carroll Way-The Carroll Waysiren was found tohavemoisture inside thesiren and
battery boxes. Repairs have been made toalleviate this condition and the function
verified.
Three Sisters– Three Sisters was found to have a lowvoltage situation on one ofthetwo
batteries at thissite. Both batteries have beenreplaced and the function verified.
Three Sisters Siren hasbeen repairedin January 2019. The radioreceiver hasbeen
replaced and a directional antennafor reception gain hasbeen added. This siren
location monitoring hasbeenincreasedto ensure function.

Rezanof Drive (Bayside Fire Department) –The Bayside location was found to have a
bad fuse. This was replaced, and the siren function verified.
Since January 2015 through the present, approximately $89,416.08 has been expended
for materials. Estimated KIB labor costs are approximately $2500.00
