06/19/1989 Regular MeetingKodiak Emergency Services Council June 19, 1989 @ 5:00 p.m. Kodiak, Alaska EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL LT. TOM CALLAHAN (NOAA): We met with Shoreline Cleanup Committee to get better intelligence as to where the crews have been to make an assessment on priorities. What we want is to get a big picture by knowing where all the oil is. On the re -oiled areas, we don't know much. The coalition people were at the meeting. JERRY HAMMOND (NATIONAL PARKS): Since Friday, the crews have been working on the Peninsula, mostly at Hallo Bay. We have 8 technicians now in training. They will be living off small vessels off the coast doing biological studies and do follow up on baseline plot. They aren't primarily there for identification of oil but will pass on information to SCAT team if they see it. MIKE LEWIS (DEC): Overflights are still flying every day. Stuff is in water and hard to see. Shoreline survey team is working on Peninsula side to do a mapping. Will try to give you an update as they come in. On passive monitoring system at setnet sites, hopefully they will start reports tomorrow. On the sampling for shellfish, I did get some reports. Will give them out to anybody and send to applicable villages. So far, none is contaminated. The most recent test result is about 2 weeks old. We are trying to bring in additional personnel, possibly 2 weeks. These personnel will be put into shoreline monitoring. JAY BELLINGER (KODIAK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE): Shoreline Cleanup Committee worked today. I am getting help, but all at the same time. LARRY NICHOLSON (ADF&G): We announced, at 4:30, an extension of 72 additional hours --9 p.m. June 22 --to Moser Bay fishery. May be possible extension of that. The fishery is looking strong. One small sheen sighted outside of Kemp Bay that appears to be a bilge problem. If something changes and we get into oil, we will shut it off within 3 hours. Our boats are there, and there is no DEC person in Alitak. We are getting complaints about it and have talk to them about getting their people in place as described earlier. I am planning on calling Dennis Kelso. tonight and anything from you would be helpful. There is one DEC person anchored in Mosier Bay. LEWIS: There are new people in training and, hopefully, we will have someone down here. WAYNE DOLEZAL (ADF&G) introduced crew member Ed Weisse: We are moving to 326 Center, Suite 208. New phone is 486-5033. Will be habitat oil people and fish monitoring people. I have not heard from Exxon in regards to work plan for Kodiak Emergency Services Council - June 19, 1989 Page 1 0404" away from eagle nests. I have had two different reports of some helicopters flying right above eagle nests. I have maps you can give to your pilots.
