06/20/1989 Regular MeetingG/ I Kodiak Emergency Services Council June 20, 1989 @ 5:00 p.m. Kodiak, Alaska EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL JERRY HAMMOND (NATIONAL PARKS): Biotechs trained. Three new people on instant command system. Productive meeting with team today on priorities. Weathered out on flying. WAYNE DOLEZAL (ADF&G): Crew out this morning. Fisheries are open on south end. BOB BRODIE (CITY OF KODIAK MAYOR) introduced Dave Young from Bob LeResche's office (the Oil Spill Coordinator Office) and Lynn Bittner, the project assistant for OSCO. JAY BELLINGER (KODIAK NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE): Ron Hood will be doing some checking of beaches further south on Shuroff (7) Refuge between Wide Bay and Anichiak. The vessel Elsco (1) came in and are tied up to dock. Veco will need to line up freezer van as there are over 4,000 dead carcasses. Veco asked yesterday if there was any plans to ship full freezer van to where it's to go. I asked and no one had asked the question before. Need to get it out of Kodiak before the wood floor collapses on van. MIKE GOODWIN (PARKS): We got a new batch of people in --2 staff and 4 volunteers. They had a chance over weekend to get to Shuyak Straits, and the residents there indicated they are observing new patches of oil coming in on their beaches. We are getting phone calls about snares at mouth of Buskin causing bad fishing for locals. Will do a media release. DISCUSSION ON MOVEMENT OF FISH ESCAPEMENT AT BUSKIN. DOLEZAL: They are moving at night. The escapement has been good. GOODWIN: We are getting additional volunteers from the Anchorage oil spill center. Will be helping us out at Shuyak. We will then have a much better opportunity to get better information. Our crews say no evidence of new oil at Big Bay. Road crew at Abercrombie Park. STEVE HANEWICH (USCG): Shoreline committee met and still have a problem in knowing where oiling is due to reoiling. I am going to talk to Commander Meyer about approaching a whole bay and work up each side of the bay and let them clean that way. He alluded to that when I talked to him earlier. Our priority list will be rejuvenated into a format is that more readable. On the sinking oil of yesterday, we didn't get any good information. The phone is there and the door is open if we can get more information.
