Vacancies for Boards and Commissions are filled through a process of application. For all open seats, applications are pulled from up to two years previous for review to see who may qualify to fill the vacancy. This list may not accurately reflect applicants continued interest. Enclosed is the record responsive to your request. This record is provided in its entirety. Since the record is provided without redactions or withholdings, there is no action by our office to appeal. I am waiving the fee for these copies, as AS 40.25.110(d) permits, because waiver is in the public interest, the fee would be less than $5.00, and/or the cost of arranging for payment would exceed the amount of the fee. Please feel free to contact me at 907-465-3500 if you have questions. Box 110001 Juneau, Alaska 99615 Dear Governor Walker, Kodiak Island Borough Office of the Borough Mayor 710 Mill Bay Road Kodiak, Alaska 99615 Phone (907) 486-9310 Fax (907) 486-9391 It has come to our attention that Mr. Kip Fanning has resigned from the Alaska Board of Game. As you vet applicants for this vacant seat, the Kodiak Island Borough strongly encourages you to consider long-time Alaska resident Dr. Larry Van Daele. Dr. Van Daele worked as a wildlife biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game from 1981 until his retirement in 2015. Throughout his career he has worked with many Advisory Committees, with the Board of Game, with both Alaska residents and non-residents, hunters and non -hunters, and represented the State and the Department of Fish and Game while traveling internationally. While living in Kodiak, Dillingham, and Anchorage, he worked on projects throughout Alaska with an emphasis on implementing the best management practices for the conservation and enhancement of our shared wildlife resources. For most of his career he was an area management biologist and then moved into the leadership position of Region 2's (southcentral Alaska's) Regional Supervisor, and served in this role for three years prior to his retirement. In addition to Dr. Van Daele's work experience, he would bring a solid academic background. He has a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management, a Master of Science in Zoology, and in 2007 he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Resources, researching "Population Dynamics and Management of Brown Bears on Kodiak Island, Alaska". In addition to his formal education, he has also written and edited numerous scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Van Daele has successfully worked for 30 years in a profession that is not without its controversies. He has successful remained above the fray while maintaining both his professional reputation, as well as that of the Department of Fish and Game, as experts in the field of wildlife management. Even in retirement he is still a resource of information, and is sought out for advice and guidance from many diverse user groups. Dr. Van Daele will come to the table with no agenda other than to successfully manage Alaska's shared wildlife resources for the enjoyment of all in perpetuity. We are very pleased that an individual of Dr. Van Daele's quality and character has stepped forward and is willing to serve his fellow Alaskans on the Alaska Board of Game.
