Also Heather assuming we have time to do so would you be able to put a rough draft letter together for us? Thanks Dan Sent from my Wad On Apr 17, 2015, at 8:26 AM, Finkle, Heather (DFG) <heather.fink1eCc0alaska.aov> wrote: Hi Dan, I am submitting another proposal to study Olga lakes sockeye salmon. This one,for the Alaska Sea Grant,is in conjunction with UAF professors Peter Westley and Anne Beaudreau. The gist of the project is to measure the growth on archived sockeye salmon scales and compare that to rearing habitat and climate,This would enable us to assess if freshwater or marine growth affects survival across age groups. Part of the project is to have a graduate student present this data and explain the results to stakeholders and the interested public. Models would also be generated that would address how different rearing habitat conditions, including fertilization, might affect production. Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Assoc.(KRAA)will be a cooperator on this project. From my previous request for a letter of support for the OSM proposal,I think we are both well aware of the importance of Olga lakes sockeye salmon to the community of Akhiok and the need for understanding the decline in returns and the Impact of any manipulations to the system. This project will provide new information for addressing those declines:would the KIB Assembly be able to provide a letter of support to include with the sea Grant proposal that will be submitted on May 1,2015? Attached is the pre-proposal that got us invited to submit a full proposal and below is a link to the Sea Grant strategic plan website(we are focusing on Goal 3). htto llseagrantuaf. _d,/r_s-ar h/rfp/2014-20t7strategic-plan.pho I am happy to field any questions about the project and provide the full proposal once Page 2of5 Olga Sockeye Salmon Letter of Support for an Alaska Sea Gran... Kodiak Island Borough Dice of the Borough Mayot 710 Mill Bay Road Kodiak,Alaska 99615 Phone (947) 486-9310 Fax (907) 486-9391 April 30, 2015 Heather Finkle Fishery Biologist III Alaska Department of Fish&Game 351 Research Ct. Kodiak,AK 99615 Dear Ms. Finkle, The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly appreciates the opportunity to support your proposal to the Alaska Sea Grant for studying the linkages among South Olga lakes sockeye salmon, their habitat and climate. This project's outreach component will also allow ADF&G and UAF to educate and develop collaborative relationships with multiple stakeholders. Numerous Alitak Bay District fishermen and Akhok residents have expressed concern over declining returns of sockeye salmon to Olga and Moser bays at Regional Advisory Council and Kodiak Regional Planning Team meetings. These declines have made it harder for Akhiok residents to meet their subsistence needs and maintain the traditional lifestyle of the Alutiiq people. Similarly,Alitak Bay District commercial fishermen have also struggled to maintain their livelihoods from what was once a lucrative fishery. To date, very limited study of South Olga lakes sockeye salmon has occurred since the M/V Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989.The data collected from this project are very valuable because they will provide new information for understanding how South Olga lakes sockeye salmon respond to habitat and climatic changes, enabling better management of the stocks and thus helping to ensure fishing opportunities for Akhlok residents and Alitak fishermen. The outreach component of the project is equally valuable for providing stakeholders the opportunity to better understand the effects of any rehabilitation efforts to the South Olga lakes, allowing them to plan for their future. The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly is pleased to support your project because it serves to achieve sustainable fisheries resources for the benefit of Kodiak and its users. Sincerely, KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH Jerrol Friend, Mayor Page 4 of 5 Olga Sockeye Salmon Letter of Support for an Alaska Sea Gran... AGENDA ITEM M.B.
