FY2014-09 9 10 A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND 11 BOROUGH REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATURE TO 12 DEVELOP A LONG-TERM SOLUTION TO ENSURE FULL AND 13 UNINTERRUPTED FERRY SERVICE TO KODIAK 14 15 WHEREAS, the State of Alaska ferry MN Tustumena provides service between Homer 16 and Kodiak and occasional service to Ouzinkie and Port Lions as well as communities 17 westward from Kodiak including Chignik, Sand Point, King Cove, Cold Bay, False Pass, 18 Akutan, and Unalaska; and 19 20 WHEREAS, the M/V Tustumena was removed from service on November 1, 2012, for 21 scheduled repairs at the Seward Ship's Drydock; and 22 23 WHEREAS, the original return to service date of April 17, 2013, was delayed due to 24 unexpected steel work; and 25 26 WHEREAS, the State of Alaska Marine Highway System approved two additional 27 extensions to allow time for the needed repairs to take place with a return to service date 28 of July 23, 2013; and 29 30 WHEREAS, inspections of completed repairs did not meet required safety standards for 31 passenger service resulting in additional time needed to complete the required safety 32 standards; and 33 34 WHEREAS, Kodiak and the other communities that rely on service from the MN 35 Tustumena have experienced negative economic impacts for over nine months with this 36 vessel out of service; and 37 38 WHEREAS, the Mayors of the City of Kodiak and the Kodiak Island Borough, on behalf 39 of the Kodiak region, will discuss the impacts to the loss of tourism and other revenue to 40 the region and the critical need for the State to develop a long-term solution to ensure full 41 and uninterrupted ferry service to Kodiak. 42 43 44 Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska Resolution No. FY2014-09 Page 1 of 2 45 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly of the Kodiak Island Borough, 46 Alaska, hereby formally requests that Governor Parnell and the Alaska State Legislature 47 develop a long-term solution immediately to ensure the Kodiak region receives scheduled 48 and uninterrupted service from the Alaska Marine Highway System. 49 50 ADOPTED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH 51 THIS FIRST DAY OF AUGUST, 2013 52 53 KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH iii ✓ 57 Jer e M.
