A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
URGING THE ALASKA LEGISLATURE TO FULLY FUND THE REQUEST
OF THE UNIV
GOVERNOR KNOWLES' 2003 BUDGET
WHEREAS, higher education is widely recognized as a primary catalyst for economic development
and diversification; and
WHEREAS, the University of Alaska is where Alaska educates its future leaders and trains its
workforce; and
WHEREAS, Alaskans educated in Alaska are far more likely to take jobs and stay in Alaska than
those educated out of state; and
WHEREAS, there is a great demand for teachers, health care workers, and trained technical
workers; and funding is necessary to emphasize, support, and further development of these
programs; and
WHEREAS, Alaska's future demands investment in new and developing industries that take
advantage of its global location such as the Anchorage air cargo hub, the Kodiak Rocket Launch
Facility, and the retrieval and processing of polar satellite data, and funding is necessary to
provide workforce training for these emerging industries; and
WHEREAS, development of Alaska's natural resources will continue to be a mainstay of the
Alaska economy and funding is requested for fisheries and fisheries by- product instruction and
research;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
that the Alaska Legislature is urged to support and fully fund the request of the University of
Alaska as presented in Governor Knowles' 2003 budget.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that a copy of this resolution be submitted to the Board of Regents, Alaska State
Legislature, and the Governor of the State of Alaska.
