1987-61 Supporting the Establishment of the University of Alaska Fisheries Industry Technology Center in Kodiak.KODAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION N0. 87 -81 -R A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY SURFOpT'NG THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FISHERIES INDUSTRY TECHNOLOGY CENTER IN KODIAK. WHEREAS. effective use of the massive Alaskan seafood resource mandates developing new and improved harvesting and product technology in and for Alaskans; and WHEREAS, the significance of the fisheries resource is indicated by the fact that recently a single red salmon was worth more than a barrel of oil; and WHEREAS, a University of Alaska Fisheries Industry Technology Cente (FITC) would provide that technology and train Alaskans to offset the grave shortage of a skilled, knowledgeable labor force; and WHEREAS. an established FITC would significantly compliment the "Americanization " and "Alaskan, zation" of Alaska's primary renewable resource, and WHEREAS, land on Near Island has already been provided to the University of Alaska for the FITC at no cost by the City of Kodiak; and WHEREAS, the Kodiak FITC site is closer to the fisheries resource biomass than any other U of A site; and WHEREAS, expanded and long term stable employment would be generate for Southwest Alaskan communities by the FITC .n Kodiak, and WHEREAS, the current economic situation indicates the necessity o' further development of our renewable resources in the State of Alaska; and WHEREAS, development of the FITC is so important that Its development must be given priority even at a time of tight financial resources for the State of Alaska. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly supports state funding for construction and operation of the 9 of A FITC in Kodiak as a very high priority project !n spite of the state funding shortfall and urges Governor Cowper and the Alaska Legislature to fund the continued development of the FITC.
