A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY URGINQ
LEGISLATURE TO MAKE THE POSSESSION AND USE OF MARIJUANA ILLEGAL.
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska allows legal private pors and use
of marijuana, and ��JJ
WHEREAS, Alaska's present statutes regarding possen and use of
marijuana are in conflict with Federal law, and
WHEREAS, recent studies have revealed increasia4ev dance of
marijuana's destructive effects on the brain, immune syskem lungs, and
reproductive system of human beings. and /--'
WHEREAS, recent studies show mar ijuana aj single and best
predictor of future illegal drug use, and
WHEREAS, the estimated direct cost of dru• abuse in business in the
United State is S60 billion per year, measured in lost productivity, increased
absenteeism, rising medical costs, more workkpla e accidents, and stealing by
employees to support their addictions, an
WHEREAS, the U. S. and the S, to to •f Alaska spends millions of dollar
every year to treat drug abuse patients, nd
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Is ySlstl ough and City of Kodiak Substance Abus
Task Force recommend that _ that posse • ion and use of marijuana be recri minali zed,
and
WHEREAS, it is t fly inconsistent to urge young people to "say no"
to drugs at the same t / V. it i legal to possess and use drugs. and
WHEREAS, thr Is a matter of concern. for the general health, welfare
and public safety o tji c times of Alaska.
NOW, TH FORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly
that the Legi a d the Governor of the State of Alaska are urged to
reenact the statutes which make the possession and use of marijuana a criminal
act.
