Bruce Schactler phoned to report that the local
processors were working on a limited entry program
for processors that would limit buyers in the Gulf of
Alaska. He said new processors would be forced to
leave because of the inability to diversify. He
urged the assembly to review the potential impact to
economic development in Kodiak.
John Houser, Kodiak Youth Services, reported on a new
program at the Youth Center to provide one-on-one
mentoring between adults and youths aged 13-18. He
noted the mentor would teach life skills and how to
deal with life outside of school. He said it was
similar to the Big Brother/Sister programs.
Joe Macinko noted there was a Senate Commerce
Committee hearing on the Magnuson -Stevens Act on
January 18. He said all processors, but Global and
Island Seafoods were invited. He said many questions
were raised; and he thought the Assembly would have
been informed.
