DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ONGOING RESEARCH AND SURVEY PROGRAM FOR THE
KING CRAB FISHERY.
an economic disaster in its effects on the welfare of a large segment of our
fishermen and the economic health of our community; and
WHEREAS, the cause of the rapid decline of this resource has not yet
been determined by marine biologists nor has a theory been forthcoming from
the scientific research employed to date; and
WHEREAS, the future of the community as a whole and the fishermen
involved is a matter of the gravest concern; and
WHEREAS, investments of multi - millions of dollars in boats, gear,
Il i and processing equipment are now idle and no encouragement for the future of
the resource is forthcoming; and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Fisheries Advisory Board has petitioned the
Alaska Department of Fish and Game and National Marine Fisheries to generate
on ongoing research and survey program to determine cause and possible remedy
for enhancing and propagation of our dwindling stock of king crab in the
Kodiak area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly supports and encourages the development and implementation of an
ongoing research and survey program for the king crab fishery.
