A RESOLUTION REQUESTING ADEQUATE FUNDING FOR THE PROCUREMENT
AND OPERATION OF A SUBSTITUTE VESSEL WHILE THE M/V TUSTUMENA
IS OUT OF SERVICE
l';HEREAS, the M/V Tustumena is the only ocean - certified vessel in
the Alaska Marine Highway system; and
WHEREAS, the M/V Tustumena is vital to the continued strong
growth of Kodiak and Southwest Alaska; and
1'YHEREAS, no service from October 1990 to at least May 1991,
possibly longer if problems are encountered, is unacceptable; and
WHEREAS, leaving the vessel tied up from January 1990 to May 17,
1990, to save money is comparable to not plowing the highway from Anchorage
to Fairbanks or Fairbanks to Tok to save money and is just as unacceptable;
and
WHEREAS, over 27,000 passengers and 10,000 vehicles depend on
the M/V Tustumena as the link to the mainland road system; and
WHEREAS, while the numbers of passengers and vehicles utilizing
the M/V Tustumena increase, the vessel is out of service for longer period of
time;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the State Legislature provide
adequate funding for the procurement and operation of a substitute vessel
while the M/V Tustumena is out of service during the proposed eight months
refurbishment project.
