1989-63 Calling for Action to End the Use of High Seas Drift Nets by Foreign Fisherman.A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR ACTION TO END THE USE
OF HIGH SEAS DRIFTNETS BY FOREIGN FISHERMEN
WHEREAS, Alaskan coastal community residents are dependent on
fishing for their livelihood; and
WHEREAS, driftnets used by high seas foreign fishermen are
causing harm to local stocks; and
WHEREAS, South Pacific nations have signed a declaration calling
for international action to end the use of driftnets; and
WHEREAS, Representative Jolene Unsoeld from the State of
Washington is spearheading a drive to ban the use of high seas driftnets; and
WHEREAS, an international conference in Seattle on October 29 will
address the issue of high seas driftnets;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly of the
Kodiak Island Borough urges all organizations, delgates and fishermen
organizations to support the call for action to end the use of high seas
driftnets by foreign fishermen.
