A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE INSTALLATION OF A 700 -MILE
FIBER OPTIC SPUR THAT WILL CONNECT THE ALASCOM, INC. NETWORK
TO A FIBER OPTIC TRUNK BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE CONTINENTAL U.S.
WHEREAS, the 1,260 megabit link will help meet the expected
demand for 40,000 long- distance circuits in the year 2000 for Pacific Rim
communications traffic; and
WHEREAS, the Trans - Pacific communications traffic is expected to
increase 17 percent a year between 1987 and 2000; and
WHEREAS, this undersea fiber optic cable will allow Alaskans
contacting the Pacific Rim and the Lower 48 the opportunity to hear
acquaintances with no interference from static or satellite switches; and
WHEREAS, the enhanced transmissions will improve the quality of
Alaskan communications; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Defense may lay a connecting
line along the Alaskan chain and Kodiak, back to Seward; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Coast Guard base In Kodiak is part of the
national defense system of the United States in the event of war, and must
have the best communications capability possible;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island
Borough Assembly supports the installation of this enhanced communications
network; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Alascom is urged to provide a
connecting line from Kodiak to Seward, either in conjunction with the
Department of Defense or as an Alascom project.
