RESOLUTION NO. 89 -44 -R
A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY
SUPPORTING THE. ADMINISTRATION IN THE CLASS ACTION SUIT
AGAINST EXXON
WHEREAS, Exxon Valdez on March 24, 1989, did spill 11 million
gallons of crude oil in Prince William Sound, and
WHEREAS, that oil spill has spread into Kodiak Island Borough
waters and has subsequently killed sea birds, marine mammals and littered the
rookeries, estuaries and beaches of the Kodiak Island Archipelago, and
WHEREAS, the oil damage has forced the closures of the Kodiak
I,. Management Area Fisheries, and
WHEREAS, the oil spill national media coverage has damaged the
image of Kodiak Island's abundant wildlife with clean water resources, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak Island Borough personnel, administration and
assembly have been affected by the time and special needs of the oil spill
preparation and operation, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak Island Borough residents and businesses
including the fishing industry have been adversely impacted by the oil spill,
and
WHEREAS, Kodiak Island Borough desires to enjoin in a legal
steering committee for the fair settlement of claims in a class action suit
against the responsible parties;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island
Borough Assembly supports the Kodiak Island Borough Administration in the
pursuit of legal claim for damages suffered by the residents of the Borough.
