A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY URGING
ADOPTION OF A STATE LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION SUPPORTING A
MORATORIUM ON OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION IN BRISTOL BAY
WHEREAS, Bristol Bay and the North
world's largest sockeye salmon fishery, a world
major components of the king crab, tanner crab
to the Bering Sea, and
WHEREAS, the residents of the Kodiak Island Borough rely on the
resources of the Bristol Bay area and the Bering Sea for their livelihood, and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough could be directly impacted by
oil and gas development in Bristol Bay and the North Aleutian Basin, since
transportation scenarios include the construction of a pipeline to tidewater on
the Kodiak side of the Alaska Peninsula, and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough Outer Continental Shelf
Advisory Council has urged the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly to support a
moratorium on oil and gas exploration and development in Bristol Bay;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly that the Alaska State Legislature is urged to pass either HJR 32 or
SJR 11, and that the adopted resolution should specify a moratorium on any
oil and gas exploration and development in Bristol Bay until the oil industry
proves that they are able to respond in a viable and adequate manner to oil
spills that might be produced as a result of exploration, development,
terminal, and /or transportation operations.
