MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF
THE PROVIDENCE KODIAK ISLAND MENTAL HEALTH CENTER ADVISORY BOARD
March 27, 2000
I. MEETING CALLED TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:35 pm by Chairperson, Jody Burcham in the Providence
Kodiak Island Mental Health Center Group Room.

MOTION: Darlene Turner moved to accept the March agenda. Cecil Ranney seconded. By
voice vote the motion passed unopposed.
IV. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
MOTION: Darlene Turner moved to accept the minutes of February 28, 2000. Cecil Ranney
seconded. By voice vote the motion passed unopposed.

V. STAFF/OTHER PRESENTATIONS:
Jody Burcham, Chairperson distributed packets on the Critical Incident Stress Management team
(CIMS) including acceptance into the international registry as a "Mitchell Model" team. The
team has been in force since 1987 and the town and Coast Guard teams have since merged. The
team consists of an all volunteer staff and the services are provided free of charge to the
community. Jody recapped the purpose and goals of the local CISM team from the Apri127, 1999
Kodiak Daily Mirror article.
Jody introduced Evelyn Wiszinckas as the clinical director for the local CISM team. Evelyn
circulated a book written by Mitchell and Everly titled `Critical Incident Stress Debriefing'. She
said that services are provided for primarily the victim themselves, secondly the on scene workers
and the thirdly organization or individuals such as counselors, attorneys, DFYS, etc. She said that
Kodiak has been praised for interagency cooperation.

VI. DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Dr. Jensen reviewed the Directors Report for February 2000. Pam Foreman asked if there were
any in-kind contributions or matching funds from the Borough to support the fire alarm and/or
sprinkler system grant. Dr. Jensen and Lola Lind explained that the only in-kind support that the
Borough, as well as other agencies, has provided were letters of support.
In addition to the written report, Dr. Jensen spoke about the success of the brown bag lunch
presentations that have been conducted during the month of March at the center.
VII. NEW BUSINESS
A. Jody provided copies of Policy 200.8 Critical Incident Response Plan for the Advisory Board
Members to review. Dr. Jensen and Lola made amendments to the copy provided. It was
generally agreed by the Advisory Board to accept the changes. The policy will be retyped and
provided to the members for acceptance at the April meeting.
B. The Advisory Board Members each described their community involvement as follows:
Pam Foreman is a member of the Soroptomist Club, the Arts Council, Chamber Board,
Island By-Ways and the music community.
Jody Burcham is a team coordinator for the Critical Incident Stress Management Team
in Kodiak, the Christian School, Rotary Club and coaches a swim team.
Cecil Ranney is a high school teacher and involved with the Red Cross as a CPR
Instructor and also a member of the Key Club and Kiwanas Club.

Thia Falcone is a National Association for the Mentally Ill affiliate, Kodiak Woman's
Resource Center hotline volunteer, a member of the Critical Incident Stress
Management Team, State Aurora Board and involved with Adult Basic Education, Teen
Court and the Victim Awareness Program.
Dave Davis is the President of the Safe Harbor Board and involved with the community
at large and many various organizations providing chaplain services and other support
services.
Dr. Jensen is the Chief of Staff at the hospital and on the Providence Governing Board.
He also coaches basketball and is a lay minister for his church.
Darlene Turner is on the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly, Rotary President, on the
Teen Court Board, Kodiak Youth Service Network, Victim Awareness group, Kodiak
Island Safety Network as well as a variety of police and peace officer associations.
C. Lola Lind distributed the new set of Policy & Procedure's and their assignment to the Advisory
Board Members.

Dave Davis -Said that he was sorry he missed the meeting last month he was off island.
Darlene Turner -Reported that she was off island also.
Pam Foreman -Thanked Lola for organizing the policy & procedures and Jody and Evelyn for the
CISM presentation.
Jody Burcham -Let the Advisory Board know that she would be out of town for the April meeting.
XI. ADJOURNMENT
MOTION: The meeting adjourned at 6:55 PM. The next scheduled meeting is April 24,
2000 at 5:30 P1V~ in the group room of the Providence Kodiak Island Mental Health Center.
