1983-03-30 Regular MeetingKODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
DATA PROCESSING STEERING COMMITTEE
March 30, 1983
Chairman, Bryce S. Weeks, called the Computer Steering Committee to
order on Wednesday, March 30, 1983, at 10:00 a.m. The following
persons were in attendance:
Bryce S. Weeks Phil C. Shealy
Joyce Healey Arthur Ruppert
Eileen Harland Carol Baglin
Mary Jo Simmons
Joyce motioned that the minutes of the February 28, 1983 meeting
be accepted and Bryce seconded. Discussion turned to the tentative
purchase of the IBM System/38. The hardware would be tentatively
purchased at the end of the first quarter, operations scheduled
for the beginning of the second quarter and training for Data
Processing personnel to begin in the fourth quarter of'this fiscal
year. Arthur Ruppert indicated the possibilities of the City
sharing the costs of the new system after Bryce and Joyce explained
the arrangement the Borough and School District have arrived at.
The committee suggested the Manager propose the costs to the
Assembly for budgeting. Mary Jo Simmons asked why the System/38
has been most actively researched. Eileen explained:
1. Service from IBM
2. Conversion is relatively easy
3. Peripherals we already own are compatible
Phil Shealy suggested the point -of -sale terminal as one area where
the City and the Borough could share costs to reduce both parties
costs. The software for the new system was discussed. Bryce
suggested his philosophy of using other municipalities first before
investigating purchasing. The committee decided that
a visit from IBM at this time is not necessary, if warranted
during the Budget process, we will ask them down. Eileen suggested
for the time being for program development, until a decision is
made whether to use a new system next year is made, that we develop
files and listings only. The microfilm file will be started during
this month. The next meeting has been scheduled for April 19, 1983.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Bryc S. Weeks, Chairman
Computer Steering Committee
