Charles Clark, new Support Center CO, Jeannine Drinkall, =, Larry Graber, Roger Fritz and Scottie Matteson of the American Legion III MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING The Chairman opened the meeting by introducing all the guests present to the members of the Commission and by reviewing the minutes of the previous meeting. IV OLD BUSINESS A. Air Force Band/Singing Sergeants - The Chairman mentioned how impressed Col. Gabriel was with the reception they received in Kodiak and that special thank you letters were to go to Page Photo, Kodiak Daily Mirror, B & B Fisheries, PanAlaska and New Northern Processors. A very special thank you was to go to Sonny Edwards of Kodiak Transit who was most kind to be on call and transported the Band to the Air Station at 3 A.M. after they were weathered in. B. Kodiak/State Medallions - still available from the Senior Citizens. C. Grants - All the grant applications submitted to the State AARBC in April were unsuccessful in receiving funding. It was recommended that these worthy projects seek funding locally through comnuni.ty involvement. Minutes May 8, 1976 Kodiak Island Borough Bicentennial Commission Page 2 V. NEW BUSINESS A. Fourth of July - Larry Graber of the American Legion, along with Roger Fritz and Scottie Matteson reported on events being planned by the Legion for the 3rd, 4th and 5th of July. These include Boxing, Pie Eating and Beer Drinking Contests, a Town to Base Race, Bicentennial Parade, Fireman's Water Fight, Flag Burn- ing and Raffle. The American Legion will provide all the trophies and awards for the 4th of July celebration. The Legion would like to have organizations in town sew Bicentennial Revolutionary uni- forms for the parade. Also for the parade floats will be encouraged. The Chairman suggested a Saturday morning breakfast brainstorming session be arranged at the Legion to co-ordinate the 4th of July activities with other groups in town. It was voted that the Lt. Governor, Lowell Thomas be asked to attend the 4th of July cele- bration in Kodiak and make the presentation of the State of Alaska Meetinghouse plaque to the Museum. B. Bell Ringing - Margaret Childs was not present but had gotten word to the Commission that articles were being prepared for the Mirror and Fish Wrapper about this nationwide simultaneous event, which will happen in Kodiak at 9 A.M. July 4th. C. Time Capsule - Lucy McIver will speak to the Historical Society about the possibility of having a Time Capsule for Kodiak dedicated and sealed on the 4th of July. D. Certificates of Recognition - The Chairman reported that all members should have their application in by the next regular meeting if they wish to recognize a person or group who has made a Bicentenn- ial contribution to the community. These will be presented on the 4th of July in a ceremony. E. Recognition of KMXT - Jeannine Drinkall, station manager spoke about the soon to be opened public broadcasting radio station in Kodiak. She expressed the hope that the station could promote the Bicentennial here. A motion was made by Gil Jarvela that the Bicent- ennial Commission recognize KMXT as it's official FM radio station and KVOK as its official AM station. Sue Starr-Bresette seconded the motion. Gil Jarvela moved that an amendment be added to his motion to recognize KOTV as the official Kodiak Bicentennial TV station. Lucy McIver seconded the motion. F. Memorandum from Beaty Langnes - Included in the members packets for their information. The minutes of the February Bicentennial Commission meeting in Anchorage were passed around for the members to read. VI CHAIRMANS COMMENTS Allen Taylor commented that future projects submitted to the State for funding be of more lasting Bicentennial significance and endorsed by the Borough Assembly. . Minutes May 8,1976 Kodiak Island Borough Bicentennial Commission Page 3 VII COMMITTEE CONvENTTS Father Kreta suggested that a block house be built and placed over the transmitter on the museum grounds and that a grant be submitted for this project to the State. Lucy McIver will write the proposal. Lucy McIver suggested that a letter be written to Beaty Langnes reminding the State Commission of the State Historical Society meeting which will take place in Kodiak November 5,6 & 7th. This item should appear on the State calendar. Gil Jarvela suggested that Beaty Langnes be contacted to obtain more information on the different meetinghouses around the country. Jeannine Drinkall would also like this information for KMXT. Gil Jarvela suggested that a campaign be conducted to clean up the cemetary. Some discussion was held as to the legal ownership of the cemetaries and the historical significance. Gil Jarvela volun- teered to chair the committee to look into the matter. VIII ADJOURNMENT Dennis Murray moved that the meeting be adjourned at 1:30 P.M. Seconded by Lucy McIver.
