1975-06-17 Regular MeetingBICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE =ING June 17, 1975 Call to order: 3:30 P.M. Borough Conference Room Present: Al Taylor, President Pro Tem Lucy McIver, Committee Member Eunice Neseth, IF " it Gil Jarvella, IF " if Father Kreta, Committee Member Margaret Childs, IF It if Jean Raines, IF if it Chuck Evans, School Representative Al Taylor discussed plans for the new museum. Funding still remains un- certain. Lucy McIver presented a questionaire that she is in the process of corrplet- ing for Helen Byrd, Bicentennial Co-ordinator for the President. It con- cerns the Erskine House and Kodiak's designation as Alaska's Meeting House. Gil Jarvella moved that the proposal for the Heritage Museum be sent along with the questionaire to Washington D.C. Eunice Neseth seconded the motion. Unanimously approved. The City will consider the Proposal for the new museum at it's next meting. Once the plan is approved by the City, Norma Holt will be asked to send out copies of the Proposal along with a letter to the State and Federal Legisla- tures, State Bicentennial Commission and other interested parties in order to involve them in obtaining funding for the project. The floor plans drawn up by'Rolland Jones were shown to the Committee along with an aerial map of the area. Father Kreta suggested enlarging the pro- posal to include --the original Baranof Dock. This is the site presently oc- cupied by Standard Oil. Father Kreta discussed the fact that there is an agreement between Standard Oil and the City of Kodiak to possibly move the tanks on the site.due to the historic significance of the area. Al Taylor suggested the committee attempt to get a copy of the agreement with Standard Oil to see what the conditions would be to reclaiming the site. Chuck Evans then suggested a letter be sent out from the Committee and the City asking Standard Oil to remove the tanks from the Historic site. . Lucy McIver and Father Kreta will look into obtaining more information in relation to this. Mr. Chuck Evans, Main School Principal was introduced as the School Districts representative to the Bicentennial Committee. Gil Jarvella moved that the Borough Assembly be asked to approve the appointment of Mr. Evans as a member of the Bicentennial Committee at their next regular meeting. Motion seconded by Al Taylor. Unanimously approved. Al Taylor discussed the good work being done for the Bicentennial Committee by the Senior Citizens of Kodiak. The Medallion Design Contest was dis- cussed as well as their handling of Bicentennial items for local resale. BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE MEEPING Page 2 June 17, 1975 Al Taylor brought up the subject of the calendar for the State Bi- centennial Commission. This is being co-ordinated with the Chamber. The USS Stein will be coming to Kodiak for the 4th of July celebration this year. The Bicentennial Committee will be hosting the ship, and the American Legion will be sponsoring the parade etc. It is important to line up a calendar of events for that weekend. Activities planned so far include: Church Tour (Father Kreta) Ram Rehearsals - Ram Site (Gil Jarvella) Horse Show at Bells Flats - July 5th (Jaycees) Tea and Tour of the Museum (Lucy McIver) Al Taylor to arrange Base transportation for the visitors from the ship for the weekend activities. Jean Rhines asked why the Bicentennial Flag was not flying. Al Taylor to check with Harbormaster to put up flag. Chuck Evans is interested in getting a program started in the schools in relation to the Bicentennial. He is encouraging his teachers to set aside time each week to cover the material in the special 1776 issue of Time magazine. Al Taylor discussed having a special Heritage Week for Kodiak in conjunc- tion with the Bicentennial. This would include special projects and con- tests with a Heritage theme This would be for school children in parti- cular with an effort made to involve as many as possible. Father Kreta particularly suggested displays of artifacts. Father Kreta also suggested approaching the churches in Kodiak for their displays of their Heritage in Alaska. Eunice Neseth made a motion that the Bicentennial Committee adopt the plan for a Heritage Week to be held during the month of February in conjunction with the Board of Education andtheHistorical Society. Gil Jarvella seconded. Unanimously approved. Margaret Childs discussed the idea of a Town Meeting Forum. Al Taylor mentioned the need for a moderator, and someone to arrange for speakers and set up topics in an education vein. He suggested that the Rotary would be a good organization to handle this. Margaret Childs moved that the Bicentennial Committee adopt the concept of the Town Meetings as a Kodiak Bicentennial Project and that the Committee approach the Rotary to sponsor these meetings and make the necessary arrangements.
