The Borough Parks and Recreation Committee met in the Borough conference
room on September 12, 1983. The meeting was called to order at 7:40
p.m. by chairman Craig Johnson. Others present were Pat Briggs, Stephani
Dochtermann, Jeff Hamer, John Sevier, Dorothy Holm, Pat Szabo and Dave
Waldron.
The chairman reported on the status of construction of Borough parks
and the status of City projects involving the Teen Center and East
Addition Park. He also reported that Dave Cook of the Kodiak Baptist
Mission had approached him about the possibility of Borough development
of a park on the strip of Mission -owned land between Mission Road and
Mission Lake, with a trade for Borough land or a lease arrangement. Pat
Szabo moved that the Committee investigate the matter and ask the Assembly
to consider negotiations with the Mission to acquire the strip for park
use. The motion was seconded by John Sevier and carried unanimously.
The committee discussed possible future projects and agreed to a group
tour of existing and potential park sites on Saturday, September 17,
beginning at 9:00 a.m, at the Borough parking lot.
The chairman announced that the State Parks Committee had invited both
City and Borough Parks Committees to meet on Tuesday, October 11, at
7:00 p.m. at the Fort Abercrombie ranger station. The purpose of the
meeting will.be to discuss with the Anchorage parks planner the Fort
Abercrombie draft development plan and the committees' concern about
elimination of overnight camping. The committee members agreed to attend.
Because of a School Board meeting, Tom Wischer and Jim Peotter arrived
during the latter part of the above discussion.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:40 p.m.
