Interview Of Borough As's'embly Applicants For The One Year Term Left Vaca...
Cd; AGENDA ITEM #2.a.
KIB is facing an important and challenging year ahead with persistent budgetary issues, contractual and
development opportunities, coalescing assembly members into an effective leadership body, and
recruiting and retaining a new borough manager. I think my knowledge base and experience can help
the borough make effective and efficient decisions on these matters. My years working on the
Consolidation Committee, on the Kodiak Workforce Regional Advisory Council, and with KIBSD have
given me a working knowledge of the borough's budget and its process, as well as how borough
departments function. My experience with Kodiak College and UAA makes me prepared to develop and
negotiate policies, as well as lead a search committee and process for an executive leader (I have
chaired and served on several searches for leadership positions in the Kodiak community and with UAA).
I understand that serving on the assembly requires research and asking critical questions—key
components of my academic and professional work as a researcher and reporter. My perspective on
leading and governing is rooted in principles of teaching, journalism, and theatre that I value:
collaborating rather than always dictating, listening rather than always speaking, asking rather than
always answering, owning mistakes rather than ignoring them. I look forward to expanding my work
with the borough.
