Notes from Discussion:
The group briefly discussed the February NPFMC Meeting. GOA Pot Cod Participation was discussed
with the pot fishermen in attendance giving some background on increased participation in that fishery.
It is believed that speculation of a future rationalization plan is driving this increase in participation.
The group also discussed GOA Tendering and Grenadier management from the February meeting.
A brief update was given on Electronic Monitoring (EM) in the different fisheries. An upcoming EM
meeting in will be held in Juneau.
The Community Fishing Association workshop at the February NPFMC meeting was discussed. A
summary of the workshop should be completed by late February to early March. The facilitator has
requested this document and will forward on to the group.
Important issues for the community coming up at the April NPFMC meeting are GOA Trawl Bycatch
Management, Stellar Sea Lion EIS, VMS Discussion paper, and various Co-op reports.
The group looked at Kodiak participants on various committees and when those terms will be up. The
community should continue to monitor participation to ensure Kodiak's representation on NPFMC and
Board of Fish committees.
No one issues were discussed from the upcoming March Board of Fish meeting.
A discussion was held on how KFAC can better serve the City and Borough. The time constraints of the
Kodiak Fisheries Workgroup and availability of information before NPFMC meetings was discussed.
Most documents are released 1-2 weeks before the council meeting, which limits the time KFAC can
review the information and forward comments and recommendations on to the KFW. We will try to better
schedule our meetings in the future to facilitate discussions.
Facilitator will work on making teleconferencing available for the meetings so Ms. McCarthy can call into
the meeting.
Recommendations to the Kodiak Fisheries Workgroup
- Continue to monitor the Reauthorization of the Magnuson Stevens Act
Forward copies of the GOA Groundfish Trawl Social Survey
Forward summary of the NPFMC Community Fishing Assoc. workshop (to be completed late
February/early March)
Next Meeting: Late March or sooner if called for by the City/Borough Fisheries Workgroup. Due to
Spring Break the most likely date will be March 28. Meeting adjourned 10:55 a.m.
